Will there be water left in the Aral Sea basin?
12 October 2000 - In 1960, the Aral Sea in Central Asia was one of the largest inland water reservoirs in the world. By 2000, the level of the Aral Sea had dropped by more than 15 meters. According to estimates by the Scientific-Information Centre of the Inter-State Committee for Water Coordination and a forecast published by the World Bank and the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea, already by 2010 all water in the Aral Sea basin may be completely used up by the growing economy.

Important report recommends new approach to stop extensive deterioration of global ecosystems.
15 September 2000 - An environment report that is considered a benchmark was launched the 15th of September in Bergen, Norway. The launch occurred at the opening of a meeting between ministers and leaders from organizations and agencies from around the world. The report World Resources 2000-2001: People and Ecosystems, The Fraying Web of Life, was launched by UNDP, UNEP, the World Bank and World Resources Institute. More than 175 scientists have contributed to this worldwide research work, which took more than a year to complete.

UNEP to assess environmental conditions in Albania and Macedonia
Geneva/Skopje, 11 September 2000 - During the next two weeks, an international team of experts assembled by the United Nations Environment Programme will visit Albania and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia to assess the environmental damage caused by the Kosovo conflict and the institutional capacity of the two governments to address environmental problems.

This analysis helps interested persons to understand where developing countries stand in relation to their commitments under the Montreal Protocol.

State of the Environment Report for the City of Tbilisi

Corporate Sustainability Reporting Guidelines set new standard for transparency
Paris, July 2000 - UNEP has released revised Sustainability Reporting Guidelines developed by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) through a global, consensus-based process. The Guidelines make recommendations for reporting on the economic, environmental and social performance of companies and represent a major step forward in elevating sustainability reporting to a level consistent with financial reporting.

New treaty on threatened wildlife and protected areas in Caribbean
Kingston/Nairobi, 20 June 2000 - An international Agreement, which paves the way for greater coordination and protection of marine biodiversity in the wider - Caribbean region, entered into force last week. The treaty, formally called the Protocol concerning Specially Protected Areas and Wildlife (SPAW), highlights the region's growing recognition of the need to conserve threatened, endangered and depleted fauna and flora and encourages the sustainable management of the region's coastal and ocean resources.

13 June 2000 - The King and Queen of Norway will be informed of the global state of the environment during their visit to Arendal on the 19th of June 2000. The centre for environmental information, GRID - Arendal, is a part of UN's Environment Programme, UNEP. The Managing Director, Svein Tveitdal, will present UNEP's most recent environmental report, GEO-2000, updated with the latest data from the UNEP.
