The graphic shows PCB and DDT in Guillemot eggs, Baltic proper (1972-1994). To assess the current contaminant pressure on the common guillemot (Uria aalge) living there, the amount of DDT and PCB in Guillemot eggs were monitored. The results, as shown on graph, demonstrates a dramatic decrease of these toxins in Guillemot eggs since 1972.

Pressure from the international community having raised awareness of its value as a bio-resource, the region is now struggling to save the sturgeon. To protect the vulnerable fish species more then 100 million sturgeon and bony fish juveniles have been released into the Caspian Sea in recent years.
